TomTom GPS
TomTom GPS is known for being forward thinking when it comes to new technology, software and features on its GPS devices. TomTom is one of the first companies to widely market GPS devices with voice-guided directions, which made them instantly popular with drivers who wanted to retrofit their cars with a GPS navigational system. Their mapping software is user-friendly, so that makes it easier for those who are new to GPS navigation to get started right away. These devices are easy to install, and after selecting a local map and entering a destination on the touch screen, voice directions will take you the rest of the way. TomTom GPS systems also tend to be less expensive for the features offered, so it’s not as intimidating to buy one.
In that spirit, TomTom GPS refurbished its TomTom One navigational assistant. While most starter navigational systems are merely stripped down versions of more expensive models, the TomTom One is actually designed for users who aren’t familiar with GPS navigation. The TomTom One installs in any car in a few minutes and is practically ready to go right out of the box. Its 3.5” touch-sensitive TFT screen offers crystal clear 2-D and 3-D graphics that put programming and operation literally at your fingertips. This is one of the ways that TomTom makes its sophisticated technology simple for people who have never used a GPS unit. The TomTom One also provides clear turn-by-turn voice instructions and automatically adjusts the volume as the engine accelerates or decelerates. There are maps of all fifty states and thousands of points of interest, but you can program your own waypoints with customized information like addresses, simply by plugging your laptop into the devices’ USB port. It also features 32 MB RAM which makes this model quick to respond to commands. It is compatible with Bluetooth technology which supports traffic/weather updates and additional city maps. Starting at about $169.00, it is also a great value.
For the more experienced GPS user, TomTom offers the TomTom GO910. This navigational device comes fully loaded with the kind advanced features that every gadget hound wants. It is one of the few devices that comes with preloaded maps of North America and Europe, integrated Bluetooth, text-to-speech functionality, text-to-speech capability, a built-in MP3 player, Ipod compatibility, ability to display photos, and a 4” screen. As far as accessories go, it also comes with a remote control, a carrying case, a home dock that is both PC and Mac compatible, a USB cable, an AC adapter, a car charger, a windshield mount, an external microphone, and audio cables for your car stereo. Because of its compact size, it is easily transferred from car to car and the design keeps TomTom’s original idea that using a touch screen is better than having a lot of manual controls. This GPS device is a little more expensive at around $600.00, but if you are really into GPS systems, it is worth the money.
As far as more task-specific navigational systems are concerned, TomTom also offers the TomTom Rider, a GPS navigator for motorcycles. Motorcyclists have several major concerns when using mounted GPS devices. The first is the glare of the sunlight on the LCD screen. TomTom has taken care of that with a 3.5” screen with a visor that can be read in direct sunlight. The TomTom Rider also integrates Bluetooth technology and comes with a wireless headset that fits in the rider’s helmet to facilitate voice commands, verbal turn-by-turn directions, and hands-free calling. It comes with a mounting kit specifically designed for motorcycles and is water resistant. When parked, it pops right off the motorcycle and is compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket.
TomTom GPS navigational devices and software provide answers for every level and type of user and are well worth checking out if you want the most practical GPS products on the market.
