Nextel GPS

Nextel GPS services have a variety of consumer and business solutions that are a little different than what other companies offer.  This includes Sprint Navigation and Sprint Family Locator for individuals and Nextel tracking devices for shipping and delivery companies.

Sprint/Nextel GPS driving navigational products are very straightforward.  You’ll need a Sprint/Nextel navigational capable device (usually a mobile phone like Nextel model i275) to download and store the software.  Once the program is loaded onto your phone, you can enjoy most of the features that you can get on other GPS devices like 3-D maps, voice guided turn-by turn driving directions, real-time traffic alerts, local searches, Spanish-language option, and access to a pre-trip planning site as long as you are in range of a coverage area.  The great thing is that you can enjoy these features right on your phone, twenty four hours a day, without having to buy any extra equipment or accessories.

The other service offered by Nextel/Sprint is the Sprint Family Locator.  This feature is currently $9.99 a month and works through the mobile web.  It will help you locate up to four different family members by phone location in real time on an interactive map that shows street addresses and surroundings.  This feature can be set to check locations automatically or manually and is password protected for extra safety.

Nextel GPS tracking devices for business are generally aimed at shipment companies that need hardware and software to manage a fleet of trucks.  The idea behind the GPS tracking of drivers is that contact with the driver isn’t enough to improve efficiency in the shipping industry.  To be truly effective, the company must be able to track what routes their trucks are taking and if there are better ways to travel.  The combination of real time contact and GPS based reports gives a company a better overall picture of what is happening on their routes.

The Nextel Road GeoManager iLM lets dispatchers track and manage fleets by integrating GPS, wireless, and internet technology, and is accessible by the company from any location that has the internet.  The Road GeoManager iLM allows for continuous two-way communication between the driver and the dispatcher, allowing for greater efficiency and better real-time reporting. A Road GeoManager iLM unit must be installed in each vehicle and monthly rates start at $24.95 per vehicle.  This is a basic system, but Nextel does offer something more comprehensive that monitors worker’s time along with productivity.

The Xora GPS TimeTrack is designed to help companies with mobile employees account for their time.  This would be a business like a phone company, where employees are dispatched to locations in company vehicles to make repairs on phone lines or towers.  With the Xora GPS TimeTrack system, managers can view detailed reports about where trucks have been and how many jobs have been completed by each individual, thereby pinpointing any inefficiency that is costing the company money.
This system works by having each employee input the job location, start time, and end time into a tamper-proof Sprint or Nextel GPS-enabled handset.  An employee must also report when they arrive and leave for the day.  This information can be checked against the job location, time scheduled, and amount of time allotted for travel and execution.  If the information doesn’t match, the problem can be isolated and resolved.  As well, the system watches overtime and employee activity so new work is assigned promptly to the right worker.  It also reroutes drivers if there are shorter or more efficient routes and ensures driver safety by monitoring vehicle speed.  This information can also be loaded into ADP or QuickBooks software to make payroll and cost-per-job accounting easier.
